Friday, June 17, 2011 Amanda Betts, a third grader at Resurrection-Saint Paul School, raised $675 to buy ten O2 for Life Pet Oxygen Masks, from Wag’N Pet Safety Gear, to equip each of the emergency response units in the ECVFD. Amanda wanted to ensure that animals involved in emergency incidents in our community have the best possible care. In the past, our department has been called upon to care for animals in distress, including those suffering from severe smoke inhalation during house fires or animals overheated after being left in a vehicle, without the equipment and training required to effectively help them. During times of crisis, such as the Gulf Coast hurricanes of 2005, emergency personnel have not always known how to help or handle pets, and many people have chosen to stay behind with their pets rather than evacuate without them. Tragically, some of them lost their lives. The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 was passed to ensure that states seeking Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance would accommodate pets and service animals in their plans for evacuating residents facing disasters. The ECVFD is currently consulting Basic Animal Rescue Training (BART), a non-profit organization run by volunteers in the veterinary profession, to develop training that will empower our personnel to safely and effectively address the needs of animals encountered in emergencies in order to help preserve human health, safety, and well being. Thanks to Amanda’s initiative and fundraising efforts the department now has the equipment necessary to begin training our emergency personnel to help pets and animals involved in local emergencies, as we help their owners.

Together we learn, work, and better serve the community. The Ellicott City Volunteer Firemen’s Association is also the only volunteer fire company to operate two fire stations in Howard County. We proudly provide service to the citizens of the Second District as the first responders in an emergency. Additionally, both stations respond to all parts of the county that include parts of Elkridge, Columbia and West Friendship as support units to alarms and other major incidents.
