On Satuday November 19 the members of the Ellicott CIty Volunteer Fire Department participated in a live burn training of an acquired structure. The training allowed the members to be better prepared for when a real house fire occurs. This was the first time in 5 years that Howard County completed a live burn of an acquired structure. Burning in a structure like this allows for more realistic fire conditions as compared to the burn building trainings that are usually done. Below is a link to the media coverage of the event including helmet cam video inside the fire.

The Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department will hold its
annual Open House on Saturday, October 15th, from 1:00pm until 4:00pm at Fire
Station #2, 4150 Montgomery Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043. Visitors, both
children and adults, can enjoy some food and fun, while they collect some
useful public safety information. Children can use a real fire hose or carry a
dummy in one of our Junior Firefighter Challenge activities, they can explore
the fire trucks, and even have their faces painted.

Parents interested in obtaining identification cards for their
children can get them from Ident-A-Kid at this event. We will also offer blood pressure checks, vehicle
rescue and fire extinguisher demonstrations, and tours of the fire station.
Visitors will have opportunities to meet and talk to the men and women
responding to fire and rescue emergencies in our community. If you find the
firefighter with a boot collecting contributions, and decide to make a
donation while you’re visiting, we would certainly appreciate it, but the event
is free to the public. We hope you can make it!...

For the second time in two weeks, a hurricane/tropical storm hit Ellicott City. Once again crews were ready and staffed the firehouse. The remnants of Hurricane Lee that hit Louisana and the Gulf Coast earlier this week made their way through the Mid-Atlantic bringing torrential downpours that some say were worse than last week's Hurricane Irene. Although there was little wind, no downed trees and power lines, Lee brought rain, flooded streets and basements. In addition to the career staffed E22 and TWR2, the volunteers staffed E21, SQ2 and B27 throughout the day running several hazard calls, flooded basements and swiftwater rescues. Station 2 also served as the base for the Fire EOC and several strike teams to assist with the call volume....
